A SPECIAL Constable was able to put a racehorse he has retrained as a police horse through its paces at a prestigious event in Liverpool.
Special Constable Giles George showcased the work he has done with Carhue, known as Huey, at the Retraining of Racehorses event staged at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, on Saturday, November 3.
SC George and Huey even got to lead former Grand National winner Pineau de Re, ridden by jockey Lizzie Doolittle, on a memorable day for the Radnorshire-based pairing.
The day featured live demonstrations, clinics and talks from top class trainers and experts, coaching riders on their former racehorses.
Special Constable Giles George and Huey represented Dyfed Powys-Police at the event along with Camarthenshire-based SC Meleri Jones.
SC George said: “We had an amazing experience at the RoR showcase day in Aintree. We had a patrol of the race course on Friday evening with fireworks in the background.
“Huey was amazing in the twilight. He only realised the following morning where he was and was a little nervous.
“With a bit of patience he was fantastic with lots of the public and organisers very complimentary of him and about the project. The highlight of the event for me had to be escorting a previous Grand National Winner past the winning post and grandstand at Aintree – surely a first for Dyfed-Powys Police Specials.”
Retired racehorse Huey has been with SC George since early last year after retiring from racing in February 2016. Huey and SC Giles had their first outing at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair last November.
SC George added: “I am really proud of Huey as he’s only been out of training for just over 18 months. He’s been a pleasure to retrain.”
