Powys County Council is inviting applications for an independent member to join its Standards Committee, which oversees the conduct of councillors across the county.

The committee, made up of nine members - four county councillors and five independent or “lay” members - has the authority to hold hearings into allegations of misconduct and impose sanctions where necessary. A sub-committee of independent members also monitors standards for the county’s town and community councils.

The role is a key part of maintaining transparency and integrity in local government. Members are paid a daily fee of £105 for a half day or £210 for a full day, in addition to travelling expenses.

No formal educational or professional qualifications are required, but applicants should have an interest in promoting high standards in public office, an understanding of local issues, sound judgement, and good communication skills. The committee usually meets three to four times a year, with additional meetings as required.

Those interested in applying can find more information on the council’s website or contact the Clerk to the Standards Committee, Carol Johnson, at 01597 826206 or [email protected]

The deadline for applications is Friday, November 7 2025.
