A secondary school teacher from Powys has received national recognition for her outstanding work helping students prepare for higher education.
Lizzie Tiernan, Head of Sixth Form at Ysgol Calon Cymru, has won the Supporting Progression into Higher Education award at the 2025 Teachers’ and Advisers’ Awards.
The ceremony, held at the University of South Wales in Cardiff, celebrates the work of teachers and adviser across the UK and is run in collaboration with the Reaching Wider partnership.
Out of 150 nominees, Ms Tiernan was one of only eight shortlisted finalists. Alongside her award, she received £500 to support her own professional development or contribute to staff wellbeing initiatives at her school.
Her award reflects years of dedication to the sixth form at Ysgol Calon Cymru. As well as tailoring the curriculum to individual learners, she has organised a wide range of extra- and super-curricular activities aimed at giving students the experiences and skills they need to succeed in higher education.
Cllr Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the passion and commitment Lizzie brings to her role.
“Supporting young people to realise their potential and take confident steps into higher education is vital for their future and for the prosperity of Powys.”
“We are incredibly proud of her success,” he said.
Lee Powell, Headteacher of Ysgol Calon Cymru, said: “We are thrilled that Lizzie’s exceptional work has been recognised on a national stage.”
“Her dedication to our students’ academic and personal development is second to none, and this award is richly deserved,” he added.
The Teachers’ and Advisers’ Awards recognise excellence in three key categories across the UK: Outstanding Pastoral and Wellbeing Support, Supporting Progression to Higher Education, and Inspirational Teacher or Adviser of the Year.
