YEAR 9 students from Crickhowell High School vied to win £1,000 for their chosen charity after following the First Give social awareness programme of study.
The pupils all carried out research before meeting the representatives of several charities.
The four teams of Year 9 pupils then selected one charity each to represent. Each team drew up a fundraising plan and at the end of the programme had to make a pitch to win the £1,000 prize for their charity.
The project was part of the students’ Welsh Baccalaureate lessons.
During the programme, the pupils organised bake sales, raffles and a sponsored silence – raising more than £200 for their charities.
In the final, the four teams made their pitches on behalf of Young Minds, Kaleidoscope Project, Contact the Elderly and SSAFA.
This enabled the students to put their public speaking skills into practice and some even produced their own videos and merchandise. The pitches were judged by a panel of distinguished guests, including: Sir Derek Jones (chair of the Prince’s Trust Cymru), Dr Geraint Williams (deputy head), Steve Roberts (vice chair of governors) and Crickhowell High School’s sixth-form principals – Zoe Fryer and Alex Greenhouse. Visitors also came to the school from the Kaleidoscope and Contact the Elderly charities.
In the end just one point separated the best teams and the winning team –representing armed forces’ charity SSAFA – was Daisy Blanchard, Allie Watkins, Erin Beer and Ella Tranter.
