ON Friday, October 13 pupils at Hay-on-Wye Primary School joined a national day of action by going green in support of climate change charity Size of Wales.
They were joined by Kirsty Williams, Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire. It was part of a fundraising effort to help protect an area of tropical forest twice the size of Wales. The pupils paid £1 to wear green to raise money which will be spent on things such as buying tree seedlings, funding rangers, supporting local people with sustainable business opportunities and lobbying for land ownership rights for indigenous communities.
The world’s tropical forests absorb almost a fifth of the world’s man-made carbon dioxide emissions and Size of Wales is raising awareness of the important of forest protection, as part of a national response to climate change. Ms Williams said: “The pupils made a fantastic effort and can be proud of how they represented their school. Protecting our tropical forests as part of the fight against climate change is a vital cause.”
