STARTING the year with a choice of two walks from the village of Garth, the Four Wells Ramblers hosted a walk for The Ramblers national Festival of Winter Walks on January 1.

Sixteen people turned up to brave the weather and the excess of mud to enjoy convivial walks. The group split near the Lake Country House Hotel with one half returning to Garth via Llangammarch Wells, and the other half climbing the Epynt scarp for an 11 mile walk.

The Festival of Winter Walks is held annually throughout the country and this year spanned two weeks from December 23 to January 7. The walks were free of charge, and open to everyone. This year the Four Wells Ramblers also organised a short walk from Painscastle, followed by a pub lunch, on December 30 which attracted 13 walkers.

The Ramblers organisation works to promote walking for pleasure, health, and leisure to everyone, of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

It wants Wales to be a place where people choose to go walking, contributing to their health and wellbeing and supporting a more sustainable way of life. It also works to protect Wales’ unique network of public paths. Other groups in Powys have also been hosting walks for this Festival and details of the East Radnor Ramblers and Welshpool Ramblers can be found on the Powys Ramblers website: powysramblers.org.uk.
