Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team (CBMRT) received eleven callouts over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.
The team were called out at teatime on Saturday, 23 August, to assist with an incident involving a person on the mountain near Heolgerrig, Merthyr Tydfil.
While arriving there, Dyfed-Powys Police called asking to assist a family group reporting lost on their walk at the waterfalls area of Bannau Brycheiniog.
As team members were responding, the Incident Controllers split them into two groups to cover both incidents which were both concluded just before midnight.
On Sunday, 24 August, at lunchtime the team were called to the Neuadd Valley for a walker with an ankle injury. Assisted by colleagues from Brecon Mountain Rescue Team (BMRT) pain relief and splinting was administered for the stretcher carry off the mountain for the journey to hospital.
As that was concluding, another call to the waterfalls area was received by CBMRT. The initial response was to a walker with an ankle injury, though while dealing with that team members became aware, from walkers passing by, of two other separate walkers with leg injuries, two others feeling unwell and while those were being handled they also became aware of a lost child in the area.
BMRT colleagues were still with CBMRT members from the earlier incident and with much juggling and redeploying of resources, all five incidents were brought to successful conclusion.
On bank holiday Monday, August 25, the activities started at 11am back at the waterfalls area with a call to a lady walker with an ankle injury near Upper Clun Gwyn waterfall. Initial assessment and reassurance was provided by a National Park Warden while one of the Remote Rescue Medics provided pain relief and splinting for the suspected broken ankle, then evacuation to the car park to the waiting ambulance.
As this was happening, a request from Bike Park Wales to assist the First Responder Team and the Welsh Ambulance Service with stretcher extrication of an injured biker.
Soon after the team were back out again in the evening to assist the Welsh Ambulance Service with a multiple casualty incident in forestry on the mountain above Abercynon.
A spokesperson from Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: “By 8.30pm we were back at our base and heading home after a remarkably busy weekend.
“With 11 calls for our help over the weekend we are grateful for all the aspects of help and support we received throughout the weekend, especially our families from whom we were away quite a bit, and we wish all the people we helped speedy recoveries.”
