Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team experienced a busy bank holiday weekend with five callouts across Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, May 4, the team was called to assist Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust and the First Responder Team at Bike Park Wales with a mountain bike rider who’d sustained concerning head and neck injuries.

They assisted with a tricky yet very careful extrication that was required, off the mountain to the ambulance.

While working on this callout, the team received a second call of the day to rescue a female with a shoulder injury in the waterfalls area.

Volunteers from Central Beacons Rescue Team who were not already deployed on the first callout worked alongside members of Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team (WBMRT).

A spokesperson from Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: “As our first incident came to conclusion, our team members involved in it began responding to the third incident to help WBMRT with an injured person at Pontardawe.

“While en route, we were stood down after WBMRT requested Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue to deal with that situation, so our members went to the ongoing waterfalls incident instead to help with the conclusion of that.

“Another very busy period for us and once again we’re grateful to our families and friends for all their support while our team members respond to the requests for help.

“Plus of course, to all those we’ve helped our best wishes go out for speedy recoveries from their injuries.”

To date the team has received 61 requests for help this year, to which they have deployed team members to 48 of those.

CBMRT is funded almost entirely by public donation in order to allow professional volunteers to provide the 999 emergency search and rescue services to the communities and those using the outdoor spaces of South Wales.
