Restoration work on the Duke of Wellington monument in the centre of Brecon has been completed.
The statue, that was previously covered up as restoration work took place, was uncovered today.
Excellent work by Elliott Ryder Construction shows the statue with a new look.
The monument was erected in the early 19th century to commemorate Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, following his victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
There has long been local discussion over whether the monument was intended to honour Wellington or Sir Thomas Picton, a general who also played a crucial role at Waterloo. Picton, albeit a controversial character, is depicted on a relief of the battle at the base of the monument, acknowledging his contribution.
Brecon Scaffolding provided the Scaffolding structure. A spokesperson for the company said: “Working on historic structures requires careful planning, sensitive installation methods and a clear understanding of heritage constraints. Our experienced team delivered a tailored scaffolding solution that prioritised safety, structural integrity and respect for the monument’s historic fabric and nature of works to be undertaken.
“As always, it's a privilege to help maintain and protect landmarks of local significance.”
