An incoming president of a Powys rotary club has launched a project with the aim of ‘opening new doors’ for young people.

Angela Ellis, of Knighton and District Rotary Club, came up with an innovative idea based around the notion of inspiring young people with new opportunities.

Angela said: “Rotary International’s theme for this year is to encourage us to open doors of opportunity and not dwell on the closed doors of the past.

“I felt that, to tie in with the Queens Jubilee celebrations, allowing junior school pupils to express their thoughts and wishes for the future would be a good idea.”

With this idea in mind, the Rotary Club began by purchasing small wooden doors - for the students to paint on the front and write their dreams on the back.

Both Knighton and Presteigne Primary Schools agreed to participate with the project, with the Knighton school deciding how best to display them.

With the support of Headteacher Mr Lewis, the students of Presteigne Primary School completed the doors and they have since been attached to the railings of the school for the Jubilee half term celebrations.

Some of the students’ dreams included wanting to end all wars, having everyone in the world be happy and ending plastic waste.

They also had aspirations of going to the moon and being footballers, ballerinas, vets, doctors, zookeepers, gymnasts and pilots.

Mr Lewis added: “I really was inspired by this project, put forward by the Knighton Rotary Club, and appreciated Rotary members Christine and Brian Price bringing it to our attention.

“We do look forward to working more closely with the Rotary Club in the future.”
