A BAND of around 60 runners from Brecon are Radnorshire are joining together to try and break a Guinness World Record in support of a Welsh charity this weekend.

Runners from across both counties will form part of a group of over 130 runners at the Wales Marathon in Tenby this Sunday, July 7 as they aim to break the official Guinness World Record for the most linked runners to complete a marathon.

The group have spent the last six months training for the event and hope their collective efforts will raise over £100,000 for Cancer Research Wales.

Many of the runners have been roped into the unusual record attempt by organiser Neal Gardner, the manager of the Royal Mail depot in Brecon.

The Llanfaes resident said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve had from local people and businesses across Brecon and Radnorshire.

“Just the other day a lady stopped me in the street and donated £20 after reading about our Guinness World Record attempt in The B&R. Our team is made up of runners of varying levels of experience, but I know it’s been a real psychological boost for all of our runners to know that the whole county is behind us. We’re so grateful for all of the backing we’ve received so far and we hope to do you all proud on Sunday.”

Fellow Brecon runner and event co-organiser Dale Evans, Cancer Research Wales Events Manager, added: “Cancer Research Wales is committed to its quest of finding a cure for cancer – a disease that claims the lives of 9,000 people in Wales every year. Our vital work is only possible thanks to the generosity of supporters like our #TeamCRW runners who, in this case, are quite literally going the extra mile for the charity. I will be honoured to stand alongside them on the start line on Sunday and bring home this Guinness World Record, along with an outstanding donation for Cancer Research Wales”

The group will be holding a fund raising coffee morning at the Guildhall in Brecon on Saturday, July 6. You can sponsor the group at www.justgiving.com/campaign/walesmarathongwr
