Cefin Campbell has called on the Welsh Government to improve evening train services for rural communities along the Heart of Wales Line.
Speaking in the Senedd, the Mid and West Wales MS raised concerns about the current timetable, which he said fails to meet the needs of his constituents.
Mr Campbell welcomed news from Transport Secretary Ken Skates, that newly refurbished trains are now operating on the line and that a fifth service is planned for December 2025.
But he said that as of December 2024, the final train from Swansea to Llandrindod Wells leaves at 17:48 - too early, he argued, for many working people or those attending evening events, medical appointments or family obligations.
“Swansea is Wales’s second-largest city - a hub for employment, education, healthcare and culture,” said Mr Campbell.
“Yet, for many in rural communities, this timetable fails to accommodate standard working hours, evening events, or commitments like medical appointments or family obligations. Now, the problem also extends to weekends and major events - times when public transport is needed most. So, with no late alternatives or adequate connections, rural communities once again are being left behind.”
He also criticised the Welsh Government for voting down a Plaid Cymru call to secure a fair share of HS2 funding for Wales, which he said could have supported infrastructure such as this.
In response, Mr Skates said he had been assured by Transport for Wales (TfW) that the new timetable would improve reliability and punctuality, helping to increase passenger numbers and ensure the service’s long-term sustainability.
He said: “TfW consider local representation when they begin the work on future potential timetable changes, and I’ll ensure that TfW hear what the Member has said today and consider whether or not a later train is required to serve passenger needs.”
