The pavement outside a shop in Brecon has been cordoned off by police after a metal spring from a car crashed into the shop's front window earlier this afternoon.

The owners of Dixies Corner, next to the Peace Gardens on The Watton, have described their shock as they discovered the metal spring embedded in the cracked window.

Owner Paul Slade said: “As far as we know, the suspension arm came off and a part of the spring went through the window.

“The staff heard a loud bang and this couple who had been outside came in and said they’d seen what had happened. They said it was a red car and that it had stopped to look but then drove off.

“Luckily no one was outside at the time or they could have been killed.”

The metal spring, which is believed to have come from a red car which was driving towards The Bulwark at 2.50pm, is embedded at roughly eye-level in the window.

Catherine Slade, who also owns the shop, said they don’t know how much the damage will cost to repair or how long it will take at this time but that they are talking to their insurance provider.

She said: “We’ll be closed for the rest of today, but I have no idea how long we’ll be closed while this is sorted though.

“I’m just so glad no one was walking past at the time because it would have killed them.

“I’m more cross that they (the car) didn’t stop to be honest.”

PC Martin Jones of Dyfed-powys Police, who attended the shop, which has been open in the town since August 1, said the police are treating it as a Road Traffic Collision (RTC) and that they would be checking CCTV in the town.

The footpath will be cordoned off until the window is supported so that it is safe for the public to pass.
