LARGE crowds of people turned out to watch the Rhayader Carnival procession as it toured the town on Saturday afternoon.
This was despite the judging in the local Smithfield having to be brought to a halt during the heavy downpour of rain just before. Then the rain stopped and the sun came out just in time for the long grand carnival procession to wind its way through the streets en route to The Groe.
Here the town’s carnival queen Beth Storer was crowned by the Mayoress of Rhayader Hayley Walton, who was accompanied by the Mayor of Rhayader Councillor Christian Walton. Beth takes over the role from Gemma Hughes the retiring carnival queen.
The afternoon’s activities were also supported by visiting queens from surrounding towns including, Llanidloes, Newtown, Llandrindod Wells and Newbridge- on-Wye.
Following the presentation of awards for winners of the carnival classes there was a great deal of entertainment for those present to enjoy. The Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon was Mike Bennett, who thanked all those who had been involved with the organising of the week’s events.
The whole week’s activities were organised by the Rhayader and District Carnival Committee led by its chairman James Stuart and supported by a very active committee.
