A SINGER who has penned an ode to Hay-on-Wye says he hopes to be able to perform the song in the town next year.

Matthew Frederick has scored a critical success with his single Hay-on-Wye which has been described as "three minutes of indie-folk bliss" and "a bucolic dream-sketch of the Welsh border town".

But the Rhondda singer, who is also the frontman of Welsh Music Prize nominees Climbing Trees, who are described as having a "uniquely Welsh" take on Americana, admits though he started writing the song while camping on the banks of the river Wye he is yet to perform it in the town.

"Not yet, no," replied the singer-songwriter when asked if he has performed the song in the town where inspiration struck. But as a regular at local festivals he does intend to return: "I’ll definitely be back in Hay at some point during 2020 to give it an airing."

Neither has a video for the song been filmed and Matthew is keen to do so in Hay: "I tend to prefer live videos rather than traditional music videos when it comes to my own songs. They’re a bit more budget-friendly, which helps, but also convey the message of the song in a more authentic way, I think, so I’ll hopefully record a little live video when I’m next in town. Perhaps on the bank of the Wye where it first came to fruition."
