Saint David’s Day celebrations in Powys, as they were across most of Wales, were delayed this year due to the heavy snow which hit the country.

But it meant March 1 became an unofficial bank holiday with the weather forcing many to take a day off school or work.

The debate on whether St David’s Day should permanently become an official day off will no doubt rumble on even though Powys councillors opted against backing the call when they discussed the issue in January.

The council’s Plaid Cymru/Green group wanted the council to throw its weight behind the bank holiday campaign but the idea was rejected and the council’s cabinet claimed an extra bank holiday could cost the authority £600,000 every year.

Cabinet member for education, Councillor Myfanwy Alexander, also said she feared if St David’s Day became a public holiday children would no longer be engaged with it as a shared experience at school.

The Independent Group councillor said bank holidays were a "British imperialistic concept".
