PARENTS in Wales could be banned from smacking their children under a plan backed by Brecon and Radnorshire AM Kirsty Williams.

The Welsh Liberal Democrat leader is one of four AMs to have forced a debate in the Welsh Assembly on banning the smacking of children.

A previous attempt to end the defence known as reasonable chastisement, that allows parents to use physical discipline, was abandoned as it was thought the Assembly didn't have the power to amend the criminal law.

AMs were yesterday (Weds) due to discuss a motion urging the Welsh Government to bring forward legislation to end the defence and outlaw smacking.
