James Evans MS has called for Powys County Council to put residents and businesses first as plans to redevelop Brecon town centre move into the construction phase.
Powys County Council has confirmed work is anticipated to begin at the beginning of March, with improvements planned across High Street Superior, High Street Inferior and the Bulwark, and the first phase running from the eastern end of St Mary’s Church through to the Bulwark.
The council says the scheme is intended to improve the pedestrian experience, strengthen connections across the High Street, support biodiversity and improve accessibility, with local feedback shaping design elements including surface materials, play features and access considerations.
The council has also said it will trial an automatic bollard system at the top of the Struet and that plans to potentially change the one-way direction of St Mary’s Street will progress through the Traffic Regulation Order process. It has also announced temporary free 1-hour parking spaces in George Street car park, equal to the number of spaces lost during construction.
James Evans MS, Senedd Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said: “Brecon is a brilliant town, and investment in the town centre must support local businesses, keep the town accessible, and reflect what residents actually want.
“Construction will inevitably cause disruption, so Powys County Council must communicate clearly, phase works sensibly, and make sure businesses can keep trading throughout. Keeping Brecon open for business must be a non-negotiable.
“I also welcome the commitment to temporary free parking and the fact that accessibility and mobility needs have been considered, but the real test will be delivery on the ground. Residents and traders must be listened to every step of the way.”
