BRECON’S street pastors will soon be patrolling the streets of the town after completing their final training day.
The volunteers, who will assist revellers in town on weekend nights, visited Brecon Police Station where they learnt how to use radios and the phonetic alphabet. They also had a tour of the custody suite.
Pc Cheryl Rudge said: "During the tour of custody, the street pastors saw what it would feel like to be detained. They also saw how the CCTV system works at night and saw some clips of boys pretending to fight, which is the sort of incidents they will be dealing with."
During the afternoon training session, the group went through some role play scenarios in teams and saw how they could deal with drunk and injured people.
PC Rudge said: "We were there all day and it was more of a consolidation of everything that’s been learnt up until now in preparation for when they get out and about."
The street pastors will hit the streets of Brecon during the Jazz Festival weekend when they will be joined by teams from Risca and Ebbw Vale who have already undertaken the training and are regularly out on the streets.
PC Rudge added: "Although the street pastors are now beginning to become independent from the police, they have our full support and will have a stand next to the Dyfed-Powys Police one at Brecon Show on August 6. They will be advertising their work and asking people if they want to join them.
"There will also be a commissioners service when after that they will be fully independent and we are hoping this will be around the end of August."
