A STUDENT has described his surprise at the rising popularity of his new cheesecake business.
Euan Scott from Crickhowell has been booked up with cheesecake orders since he set up Cheesert in November.
The 27-year-old set up the sweet treat business from his family’s kitchen which has received over 1,600 likes on Facebook in just four months.
Euan, who has worked in kitchens since he was 16, said: “I started trading at the beginning of November, so it’s surprising because it hasn’t been going that long really.
“I chose to do cheesecakes because I was just bored of seeing typical cheesecakes which are quite boring to look at. I wanted to do something different and creative.
“When I first started it had a couple of likes but it’s now got over 1,600 on Facebook and I’ve had people in touch asking if I’ll supply their businesses around Crickhowell and I’ve had a lot of customers.”
Euan, who lives with his mum Sam, and his brother and sister, is currently working on building a kitchen unit in his garden to use instead of the family kitchen.
Despite the variety of cheesecakes in different sizes he can make in the kitchen, which has been given a five hygiene rating, it cannot handle bigger orders.
Euan said when the unit is finished, he also plans to set up a camera station to create videos on how he makes the cheesecakes.
Customers can buy different cheesecakes in sizes ranging from small, which serves six people and costs £25, to extra large, which serves 12 and costs £40 – customers often have to order cheesecakes a week in advance.
Cheesert also does cheesecake truffles at £3.50 for six pieces and seasonal specials, cheesecakes in half Easter eggs, and cheesecake crepes for pancake day.
The self-confessed dessert lover said: “All of my ingredients come from local producers – so, for instance, the cream cheese comes from a local dairy farm.
“It’s not just from the supermarket. It’s high quality local stuff.”
Euan made the decision to leave his job as a chef in the Celtic Manor, Newport so that he could enrol at Coleg Gwent in Ebbw Vale.
He said: “I did work at the Celtic Manor but I decided to go into full time education, it’s a bit of a decrease in wages going to being a student from employment.”
Euan is studying media and design which he is tailoring to the business with the help of his tutors.
Proud mum Sam, who quite often helps in the kitchen when Euan’s in college, said: “When he told me he was doing this I was a bit sceptical, with hindsight I feel very guilty for doubting him.
“He’s gone from strength to strength and I feel really proud to call him my son with his achievements.”
