A Brecon woman’s stunning puffin portrait has won a national wildlife photography competition - and will now feature on the front cover of a 2026 charity calendar.
Zoe Mathias, manager of Monmouthshire Building Society in Brecon, was named ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ in the Cuan Wildlife Rescue Calendar competition. Her winning shot, taken on Skomer Island off the coast of Pembrokeshire, captures a puffin peeking out from behind a rock - a moment she’s titled ‘Peekaboo‘.
Wildlife photography, Zoe says, has become her passion - a creative escape that not only connects her with nature but supports her mental health.
“There's a unique thrill in patiently waiting for just the right light, angle, or movement, whether it's the graceful leap of a deer or the intense gaze of a bird of prey,” she said.
“Every outing is an adventure, filled with the challenge of tracking wildlife while remaining unobtrusive and respectful of their space.
“Through my lens, I strive not only to create beautiful images but also to tell stories that inspire appreciation and conservation of the natural world.”
Zoe added that photography has also become a “powerful tool” in helping her manage stress and anxiety.
“Photography has been a powerful tool to support my mental health, offering a creative outlet for self-expression and mindfulness,” she said.
“Focusing on capturing moments, whether in nature, urban settings, or everyday life. Encouraging me to slow down, observe my surroundings, and stay present in the moment.”
“It allows emotions to be explored and shared in a nonverbal way, making it especially valuable for those who find it hard to express themselves through words,” she added.
Although photography is a hobby, Zoe’s image will now be seen by thousands through the Cuan Wildlife Rescue calendar, with her winning entry taking pride of place on the front cover.
