A CARE home in Libanus is providing new support for people in the advanced stages of dementia through music.

The Mountains Nursing Home, which is owned by Milkwood Care, started the Music and Movement pilot project which will run for 25 weeks.

The project, which is run by Louise Money with the support of Dementia Matters in Powys and Morrisons supermarket, provides a way to communicate for those living with more advanced dementia.

If the project is successful, the care home will be sharing what they’ve learned with other care homes in the UK to enable them to adopt something similar for their own residents.

Sam Bolam, the chief officer of Dementia Matters in Powys, said: “Dementia in the end phases can be very socially isolating for many different reasons. Communication can become increasingly challenging and people can find themselves cut off from what it going on around them.

“We are fortune to have a skilled practitioner like Louise who is so able to reach out to people and enable them to connect to others in an incredibly positive way. The value of this is immeasurable.”

Music and Movement is being support financially by Morrisons supermarket who have donated £6,500.

Jeremy James, the customer service manager for Morrisons, handed over the cheque on behalf of the supermarket on Wednesday, September 20.

Mr James has also recommended the Libanus group for further funding in order to help spread their work when the pilot finishes.
