Radnor YFC recently held two weekends of public speaking competitions, kindly hosted by The Lion Royal, Rhayader, NFU Cymru and Wales YFC.

On Saturday, November 4 NFU Cymru sponsored the Junior Reading competition where 12 teams competed and read extracts from Northern Lights, written by Phillip Pullman.

The winners of the Junior Reading Trophy were Llanbadarn Fynydd YFC, followed closely by Teme Valley YFC in second and Cantal YFC in third, with Harrison of Llanbadarn Fynydd winning best individual.

Other competitions on this day included Situations Vacant which was won by Amy Hammonds of Edw Valley YFC in the Senior Section and Sally Griffiths of Presteigne YFC in the Intermediate Section.

The annual Junior and Senior Member of the Year competition also took place, with Tori of Howey YFC winning the Junior Member of the Year and Elizabeth Swancott of Teme Valley YFC winning the Senior Member of the Year.

The second weekend of Public Speaking competitions started with the Senior Mace Debating with teams from across the county entertaining supporters with their lively debates on rural and current affairs.

Penybont YFC and Radnor Valley YFC came joint second with Mark Nixon, Rebecca Williams and Lou-Lou Mitchell of Edw Valley YFC taking the overall winner’s trophy.

Carys Powell of Penybont YFC won the much-coveted trophy for Best Speaker.

The Ian and Elaine Blair Bursary was also announced with Cantal YFC taking first prize, Edw Valley and Teme Valley YFC sharing second place and Penybont YFC being awarded third prize.

On the next day it was time for the juniors to show off their public speaking skills with Laura, Ellen and Sioned, Cantal YFC clinching the title for the Junior Public Speaking and Tori, Howey YFC talking the trophy for the Best Speaker.

The Intermediate Brainstrust was up next, and Howey YFC came out on top with Cerys Fairclough, Tori, Theo Davies and Billi claiming top honours and Sally Griffiths, Presteigne YFC winning the trophy for Best Speaker.

The overall trophy for the weekend was won by Cantal YFC, with Howey YFC runners-up and Penybont YFC taking third place.
