Three Mid Wales towns have turned pink as part of the national Cancer Research UK Race for Life week running from Monday, May 6 to Sunday, May 12.

Many shops and businesses in Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader and Builth Wells have been decked out with pink ribbons after Tesco store manager Lee Cartledge told his store’s community champion Jayne Griffiths to “go out and paint the town pink”.

Jayne got Glenys Weale at Builth Wells’ Co-op store and Carolyn Finlow-Borrowdale in Rhayader to pitch in with the planning.

Jayne, who has lost two close friends to cancer, moved to mid Wales at an early age and has spent nearly 40 years living and working in the area.

For nearly 25 years she ran her own florists business in Builth Wells before joining the Tesco team at Llandrindod.

This year she has used 9,000 metres of pink ribbon to create bows and decorations to put around the three towns. Jayne said the money raised will be donated to Cancer Research UK via the three local Cancer Research UK support groups in each of the towns.

She said she hoped the event had also helped to boost the community spirit in the three towns.
