A family-run business in Builth Wells is celebrating 40 years of trading, looking back at their years of selling ammunition, rifles and shotguns.

N.J. Guns was first opened by Neil, fulfilling a childhood ambition. "I have been interested in shooting since I was about 5 and I have always loved guns."

He first started shooting at Tregoyd, before he became an experienced marksman. Over the years, Neil has represented Wales in all disciplines of target shooting.

When he was old enough, Neil found a way to get into the gunsmith industry. "I was working for John Slough of London, Gunsmiths, in Hereford until 1982. I then decided to branch out on my own and bought 2A High Street in Builth Wells. I had to completely refurbish the entire building."

40 years later, Neil can still be found at 2A High Street. "I opened in July 1983. I only used the back of the shop as there was still a lot of work to do in the front. I opened the front up about December 1983."

Specialising in down the line, automatic ball trap and Olympic trap, Neil has won gold, silver, and bronze medals in mini Commonwealth games.

He's met many people over the years and doesn't take customer support for granted. "Over the last 40 years, I have seen a lot of changes and I have met some really lovely people along the way. I am very lucky to be supported by my customers and I appreciate every one of them.

"Even though the shop is quite small, it is regularly referred to as an “Aladdin’s Cave” and we have a huge variety of stock."

Now, Neil runs the business with his son, Lloyd, keeping the business firmly in the family's control.
