FIREFIGHTERS based in Knighton have thanked the local community for their support in fighting the proposed closure of their station.

Members of the Mid and West Wales Fire Authority ruled out any station closures at their budget meeting in Carmarthen earlier this week.

A community campaign against closure sprung up once the proposal to close five stations, including Knighton and Montgomery, which have retained volunteer crews, were revealed as an option being considered to help the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service make savings of £4.1 million by 2016.

Local businesses had paid for SOS Save Our Station t-shirts and banners while local residents were also encouraged to send letters arguing against the closure to the Mid and West Wales Fire Authority.

Knighton Fire Station watch manager Martin Neary said: "Thank you to everyone who supported us."
