Retired dairy farmer Emyr Wigley, from Powys, won a well-deserved RABI Trustee Award in November for his incredible fundraising efforts. Emyr was presented with the award at RABI’s first ceremony for Welsh committees and volunteers, held at the Welsh Winter Fair.
Over the years, Emyr has raised a phenomenal £86,298 for the two charities close to his heart: RABI and Ovarian Cancer Action. Funds have been raised by hosting an annual Open Farm and Gardens event and donations from the sale of his herd of British Blue cattle.
Since losing his wife, Evelyn, to ovarian cancer in 2015, Emyr started the event to showcase ‘Eve’s Garden’ which she lovingly designed. He also used his expertise to set up the pedigree herd in her memory.
Linda Jones, RABI regional manager, says, “The money Emyr has raised is being used to support the farming community when they need it most and he is thoroughly deserving of the award. On behalf of RABI, I would like to say a big thank you for all of his efforts.”
2021 marked the fifth Open Farm and Garden event, the Old Stackyard Blues, and Emyr presented the cheque for £2,000 to RABI chief executive, Alicia Chivers during the awards ceremony. He is already planning 2022’s event, being held on 3 July, which will feature a sit-down afternoon tea for the first time, along with a raffle and plant stall.
“I wish him the best of luck for his next event and urge anyone who can to go and support!” concludes Linda.
