Emergency services are dealing with a “serious” crash between two cars near Libanus.

The two cars collided before 8am on the A470 at the junction for the A4215 which leads to Defynnog.

Drivers approaching the scene of the crash from the Storey Arms could see unmarked police cars with their lights on blocking the road.

As well as Dyfed-Powys Police officers, there are two fire crews and ambulances at the scene.

A dark grey car could be seen with its airbags deployed and its front destroyed however there was nobody inside the car.

The second car was surrounded by fire fighters who were cutting the occupants free.

A police spokesman tweeted a picture and to say the road is closed. He said they will post an update when the road re-opens via the Brecon Roads Policing team’s account.

He said: “We are currently dealing with a serious collision on the A470 at the junction for Defynnog just south of Libanus. Please use an alternate route we will update you when the road is back open.”

Police are diverting drivers in the area via the Defynnog junction and into the lay-by next to the road.

Recovery arrived at 9.40am and is in the process of removing the two cars, understood to be a Volkswagen Golf and a Skoda Rapid, from the road.

It's not known what condition the drivers are in at this time however two people have been transported to hospital.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 7:50am to a road traffic collision on the A470 near Libanus, Brecon. We responded with two ambulance officer vehicles, a rapid response vehicle and two emergency ambulances.

"Two patients were conveyed to hospital, one to Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil and another to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny."

The police spokesman tweeted again via the Brecon Roads Policing account to say the road had reopened at 11.30am after being closed for three hours and 40 minutes.
