THE largest piece of community artwork to go on tour in the UK was on display in Brecon last week.
The Great Community Mural, which contains hundreds of pieces of artwork contributed by churches all over the country, was on display at Brecon Cathedral from Thursday, October 19 until last Sunday.
The pieces of A3 artwork depict a variety of church settings and activities all stitched together around a centrepiece by the artist Tim Steward.
The structure, which is 10 metres wide by three metres high, aims to encapsulate the role the Church plays in the local community.
All the pieces of artwork were submitted as part of a competition run by the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group in which the winner won a £10,000 prize for their local church.
There was also a £2,500 prize awarded to four “highly commended” entrants. Michael Angell, church operations director at Ecclesiastical, said: “The Great Community Mural has been developed as visual celebration of the relationship between church and community, with contributions submitted by parishes up and down the UK.
“We were hugely impressed by the quality of all the entries.”
