James Evans says people in rural Wales feel short-changed because of cuts to public transport.

The Brecon and Radnorshire MS said at the Senedd that Transport for Wales are cutting services - including in Llandrindod - on the rail network.

He said: “The Welsh Government talks a lot about getting the public to use public transport more to reduce carbon emissions, but people in rural Wales feel short-changed.

“They don't have bus networks, and now they're having their rail links taken away from them.”

Mr Evans asked Transport Secretary, Ken Skates, how he could assure people in his constituency and throughout rural Wales that the Government takes their issues and concerns seriously.

He said: “It does feel for a lot of people that everything happens in the urban environments, but nothing seems to be happening in rural Wales.”

Mr Skates said the Government takes the needs of people in rural Wales extremely seriously.

He said: “With regard to Transport for Wales services, there are actually more rail services now operating in Wales than before Covid. And that is not the case across the UK.

“We’re also seeing more trains and train carriages being used. My understanding is that, whereas Transport for Wales inherited 270 carriages in 2018, they'll soon be operating trains carrying or pulling almost 500 carriages.

“There are more services.  There will be benefits for rural areas. But I do accept the particular point with regard to the Heart of Wales line. I will meet with residents and elected Members.”

As part of the Transport for Wales (TfW) Future Timetable Review, there are plans to reduce the number of services running through Llandrindod Wells from five to four per day, with the removal of two late evening services to Llandovery and Llandrindod also proposed from December 2024.

The review was undertaken to ensure timetable commitments best meet the demands of customers and are fit for the needs of passengers.
