HELPERS at the Brecon Volunteer Bureau have been working hard to transform the neglected garden behind their office into an area which can be used by the community.

In January the organisation, which matches registered volunteers to those who need them, moved to a location on The Struet in Brecon, which previously was the Wardrobe clothing shop. The garden had been left untended by past owners, becoming inundated with rubbish and debris before Sue Spalding and her team began restoring it in April.

‘Stan’s Garden’ is named after the elderly man who used to live in the house and now produces vegetables such as tomatoes, beans and lettuce, which are sold along with homemade jams at the Bureau’s weekly tea club. Ms Spalding said, “It has gone from being an overgrown tip to a gardeners’ and bees’ paradise. The garden gives people an opportunity to work and sit outside and enjoy it.”For more on this story see this week's Brecon and Radnor Express.
