Llandovery Walkers are Welcome's first walk of November took place around the RSPB Reserve of Ally y Groes, in the Rhandirmwyn area.

This has been for some years a very popular walk on our programme, and this year was no exception, as 11 of our members turned up to follow what is a demanding circuit, which includes a significant climb up to the summit of the reserve. We began the walk at the new bridge over the Towy at Gallt-y-Bere, and followed the minor road past Junction Pool and then onwards along the track which leads to the farmhouse of Rhyd-y-Groes. Soon after we entered the Reserve, and began the stiff climb of some 250m through the forest and up to the plateau, a climb which was quite demanding but which, when we reached the top, revealed a glorious panorama of the hilltops all around us. We then made for the wide Forestry track which would now take us down to the valley of the Gwenffrwd, where we met the minor road at Nant-Rhyd-Ifor. Here we turned to follow this river, before turning sharp L and following the Towy, which took us back to Gallt-y-Bere and the car park. It had been a demanding Walk, but one which was both very invigorating and satisfying.
