Powys council is meeting today to discuss a damming report into its children’s services.
The council was heavily criticised this week after a report found children had been put at risk due to organisational failings in the service blamed on poor leadership.
Council leader Rosemarie Harris, who heads the Independent/Conservative administration that took control of the council in May, has apologised but said it has started taking action to address the shortcomings.
Meanwhile it has emerged Welsh Government ministers and inspectors only learned from the media that the council has contacted Dyfed-Powys Police about potential manipulation of children’s services performance date.
The council is due to meet with police officers later today for advice on how to proceed with the mater.
Cllr Harris has also said the cost of improvements to the service will be around £4 million. The council had been planning cuts of more than £1m.
At its County Hall, Llandrindod Wells meeting today the council will discuss a draft improvement plan. It was given 20 days, from Tuesday, to draw up such a document.
Today’s meeting will be the first time Cllr Harris has faced the full council since the report by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate (CSSIW) was published on Tuesday.
The meeting starts at 10.30am and you can watch it by following this link: https://powys.public-i.tv/core/portal/home
