WELSH Secretary Alun Cairns has hit the campaign trail in Brecon - and claimed Mid Wales is missing out on Welsh Government spending.
With just a week to go before Welsh voters go to the polls the Conservative attacked the Welsh Labour Government and said: "Mid Wales is not getting its fair share."
But he denied cuts to public services in Mid Wales could be blamed on the UK Conservative government’s spending cuts. He said Wales receives £115 from Westminster for every £100 spent in England.
The MP, whose Vale of Glamorgan constituency includes the Welsh Government owned Cardiff Airport, criticised the spending decisions of the Cardiff Bay administration.
He said: "It is all about priorities in a £15bn budget. You can decide what is important and what’s not and I think Mid Wales has been in a position where it has had to suffer because of consequences of Labour buying airports and prioritising Valley communities."
Labour’s candidate Alex Thomas hit back and said Labour has supported Mid Wales.
He said: "In the last two months alone Welsh Labour has announced an investment of £1.7m in Llandrindod Hospital. Welsh Labour is a party for the whole of Wales, unlike the Conservative government in Westminster.
"We are investing in building an economy that works for everyone that means protecting and increasing the wages of agricultural workers, securing 100,000 apprenticeships and helping 15,000 young people into work."
Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Kirsty Williams is defending the Brecon and Radnorshire seat. During the campaign she has pointed to the investment in Llandrindod Hospital as a success of her budget negotiations with the Welsh Labour Government. Mr Cairns criticised Ms Williams and the Lib Dems for supporting Labour’s budgets.
Ms Williams has a 2,757 majority over the Conservatives and has won the seat at every election since the Welsh Assembly was established in 1999.
Four Assembly Members to represent the Mid and West Wales electoral region will also be elected next Thursday.
Voters will have two ballot papers for the Assembly elections and on the second paper will be asked to vote for one of 12 parties that have all nominated at least four candidates.
There are five regions across Wales each electing four AMs using a form of proportional representation.
Labour currently holds two of the four Mid and West Wales seats with the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru holding one each.
