THE Grow for Talgarth volunteers were excited to learn that they were runners up in ‘Cultivation Street’ 2017, a national competition which rewards communities for enhancing their neighbourhood.
The spectacular sunflowers along the riverside became the centre of attention with some even sculpted into smiley faces. They were the subject of numerous selfies, encouraged many conversations and lots of appreciative comments.
Community involvement is at the heart of Grow for Talgarth. The plant boxes around the town were donated by local farmers or made by residents. Gardeners supply plants from their own garden, grow plants from seed and exchange plant knowledge.
A small group of volunteers meet weekly to plant, maintain the boxes, clear the determined brambles along the riverbank and undertake any other tidying up tasks. They believe it’s fun, healthy and a great way to get some fresh air and a chat.
As the Grow for Talgarth volunteers start preparing for planting this year, the plan is to grow even more flowers, vegetables and herbs and to encourage others to get involved hopefully making this year’s entry for Cultivation Street even more successful. Talgarth will be adorned with many more smiles!
