A WOMAN in her 60s from Breconshire has been tricked out of £14,000 by telephone scammers who remotely accessed her computer.

Police are now reminding people to always be suspicious of phone calls from people asking to access their computer.

The woman had received the call on Wednesday, April 13 when the caller, who claimed to be from BT Openreach, told her her internet had been compromised.

Police said the victim has told them the caller sounded "very professional and convincing in their reason for phoning."

She was told her computer security was at risk and required urgent attention to keep it safe. She then allowed them to access her computer computer remotely. The caller was then able to transfer the huge sum from her bank account.

PCSO Emma Jackson, of Dyfed-Powys said: "The advice I give to people in the community is to always be suspicious when you receive calls out of the blue asking for access to your computer, personal information or bank details. Don’t engage with these callers. Hang up immediately and report it to Action Fraud via their website www.actionfraud.police.uk.

"Tell others to do the same. Make sure you have the appropriate security software on your computer and consider getting a device from your phone provider to block unwanted calls. Anyone is at risk of being scammed regardless of age or vulnerability. If you would like advice regarding scams, please contact 101 and ask to speak to your local PCSO."

Police said the fraud will be looked into by Action Fraud and the victim’s bank.
