A primary school in Talgarth have had their hard work recognised with their recent Estyn report.

Ysgol y Mynydd Du, which has 106 pupils on roll, was praised for ‘positive and nurturing working relationships with pupils’, as well as a school where ‘everyone feels valued’.

The engaging teaching methods were praised, as well as the schools productive partnerships with families. Healthy eating options were noted, as well as appropriate safeguarding for pupils. Other positives were that ‘most pupils feel happy and safe, behave well and engage in their learning effectively’, and that ‘most pupils, including those with additional learning needs (ALN) and those living in poverty, make suitable progress from their starting points’.

Only three recommendations were made for continued improvement in the school, with staff encouraged to improve attendance, improve pupils’ Welsh language speaking skills, and address inconsistencies in the quality of teaching to ensure that all pupils have access to high quality learning experiences.

Acting headteacher Tara Morgan has been in the role since September 2023, serving as deputy head when the school first opened. In September 2025, she will take on the role of headteacher permanently. Speaking to The Brecon and Radnor Express, she said: “It’s no secret that the past two years have brought their fair share of change and challenges — for staff, pupils, and the wider school community. Despite this, Estyn recognised the strength, resilience, and commitment that define our school. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together and how our shared values shine through in every classroom. Our school has a warm, close-knit, family ethos where the relationships between staff, pupils, governors and parents are absolutely paramount. Well-being is at the heart of everything we do, and it’s wonderful to see that reflected in the report.”
