A primary school in Brecon was visited today by two princes and three princesses from the Zulu nation.

Along with the five children of King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, the Llanfaes Community Primary School children were greeted by the king’s sister and a representative of Queen Pumi as well as a member of the High Commission for South Africa.

The Zulu royals enjoyed a performance of a song about tackling plastic waste to the music of Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now as well as songs like Sosban Fach and a traditional Welsh dance by year two children dressed up in traditional Welsh attire.

During the assembly, which had parents and grandparents spectating from the doors to the hall, headteacher Karen Lawrence said she was happy to share Welsh culture with the group.

She said: “We are a Welsh school, although we don’t teach through the medium of Welsh, we do celebrate it and we encourage Welsh with both children and their parents.”

The visit marks the 140th anniversary since the battle of Rorke’s Drift which saw British troops fight the Zulus in South Africa.

Unfortunately the king and queen were unable to attend the assembly – it is understood they struggled to sort their travel and visa arrangements in time, however they did land in the UK at midday.

The representative of Queen Pumi said at the end of the assembly: “I was so emtotional and still am, when I see this welcome from all of these little angels.

“I’m so sad our king and queen couldn’t be here as part of this, sadly they couldn’t get their visas sorted in time.”

Princesses Sinethemba, Nqobangothando and Mukelile Zibusiso along with Princes Bambindlovu and Buzabi taught the children a dance which they do with children at schools in the Zulu Nation as well as how to greet the king when entering the palace.

After the assembly they were given a tour of the school where they met nursery and reception children who were not in the assembly.

Also in attendance at the assembly was AM Kirsty Williams, Dorcas Creswell of the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh, as well Powys County Councillor and school governor David Meredith who made all the cakes for the royals.

The children sang for the Zulu Nation royals as they left the school and waved flags for them.
