LAST Saturday Radnorshire Men’s Premier League side played one of their most important matches of the season at home to Port Talbot.

In a game which started closely and remained tight until the last third, Radnorshire drew away. The hosts eventually winning on four ends and by the comfortable margin of 148 to 103 shots, thus claiming 18 very valuable league points.

All credit to the winning Radnorshire skips David Weale, captain Luke Harwood, with a big 32—9 win, and Ken Price for leading their rinks to wins for the second week running, the fourth winning skip was Sam Roff.

Ken Price in particular had some excellent shots in his huge 37—11 win, his four gaining no less than 22 shots in the last five ends, and he once turned a deficit into a six bowl end victory.

The surprise of the day was the defeat of Robert Weale’s four. This going to prove that in bowls even for the best players not everything goes right, because Robert was struggling at 14—5 down, but in fairness fought back to 16—16, but eventually lost 21—17.

Radnorshire won despite the Presteigne international bowler losing, but over the whole season he has been a big asset to the club, and they go into their final fixture away at Blaenau Gwent on Saturday March 12 confident of finishing at least next to bottom, and possibly third from the bottom.

On Sunday afternoon the Radnorshire Ladies played away at Earlswood in their last DJ Trophy match of the season, and had good wins on both rinks played.

The rink of Sheila Spurgeon, Ann Edwards, Gill James and Wendy Price(skip) won by 32 shots to 14, whilst the other rink namely Terri Webb, Olive Jones, Paula Summerfield and Pauline Wilson(skip) defeated their opponents 30—17, making an overall total of 62 to 31.

This Saturday there is a Men’s International team practice match at Llanelli, Radnorshire’s Clive Martin will be involved. Whilst at the Radnorshire Indoor Stadium, Brecon and Radnor Short Mat bowlers play two rinks in the morning and one in the afternoon.

On Sunday the Welsh Indoor Bowling Association Open Fours second and third round matches take place over four rinks, with a Radnorshire squad involved, whilst four rinks also take place at Islwyn and Merthyr on the same day.

Ladies practice away, with Paula Summerfield, Wendy Price and Betty Morgan all involved. On Wednesday March 9, Radnorshire’s Mixed Friendly Team play their annual home match against Leominster over six rinks commencing at 2pm.
