APART from a damp Friday morning, the weather during Welsh finals week at Llandrindod Wells’ Rock Park greens was very sunny and warm.

The Weale brothers, Brian, Stuart, David and Robert, lifted the Welsh fours title for the ninth time, wight as brothers and other with father Bill rather than younger brother Stuart.

In the semi finals the Weales of Presteigne defeated monmouthshire 31-7.

Then in the final also played last Thursday they beat Carmarthenshire by 20—8 to again win the Welsh rink title, and qualify to play in the British Isles Championships in Belfast next year.

After qualifying for the triples semi finals earlier in the week, Dale Gorman, David Weale and Robert Weale were unable to emulate the brothers success of the previous day, because in a match on Friday morning delayed because of the wet weather they lost 18-8 to the Vale of Glamorgan.

The other Mid Wales success story featured the senior pairs partnership of brothers Ray and Ken Price (Llandrindod) who beat Carmarthen County in Wednesday’s first round 21-10, then in the afternoon they defeated the Vale of Glamorgan by the much closer margin of 15-13.

On the Friday morning they triumphed 23-17 over Monmouthshire in the semi finals, before winning their third title this century(since 2000) having previously won in 2006 and 2008.

In Friday afternoon’s final they beat Monmouthshire 19-7.

A further final of local interest was the Under 18’s singles final.

The Llandrindod Wells Bowling club members had been following the fortunes of their 16-year-old local youngster Jordon Larke during the week. After progressing through the earlier rounds he arrived at the final on Friday afternoon to play the more experienced Crocker of South Glamorgan.

Jordon gave a good account of himself and his opponent a competitive match but the South Wales player ran out a 21-13 shot winner, being ahead virtually all of the final.

Last Tuesday, in a very strong standard Under 25’s competition Llandrindod’s John Price beat Hookings of the Vale of Glamorgan 21-15 in the first round, but lost 21-11 to Richards of Pembrokeshire in the next round.

On the same day at the other end of the age scale Ray Price, Brian Torode, Brian Jones and Ken Price (skip), also of the host club competing in the senior fours comfortably beat Carmarthen County 30-11, but then lost agonisingly 18-17 to Monmouthshire in the next round later in the afternoon.

There was more disappointment for the Mid-Wales Bowling Association because in the pairs championship Gareth Sims and Luke Harwood of Llandrindod Wells were beaten narrowly 21-20 on the last end by Pembrokeshire in Wednesday’s first round.

In Tuesday morning’s singles first round Gareth Wills of Presteigne must have been gutted to have lost 21-17 to Jackson of Pembrokeshire, especially when it is remembered that he overcame long standing Welsh international and club-mate Robert Weale in the Mid-Wales county singles final in July.
