Aberystwyth University 6 Brecon Ladies 2
ON Saturday 8, Brecon Ladies set off to Aberystwyth University for their second league game of the season.
With a young and newly formed team, Brecon opted for a defensive strategy going into the game. The Aberystwyth team seemed to have adopted a similar approach and took a cautious start to the game, holding possession whilst looking for breaks in Brecon’s defence.
With some swift and strong passing from midfield and fast movements off the ball, Aberystwyth Uni scored their first two goals within the first 20 minutes of the game.
Brecon were not without breaks though, and the young forwards Hannah Williams, Hannah Mills and Jade Newton-Perry were able to break through the University’s defence to win Brecon a penalty corner.
Beth Wood and Hannah Mills weaved through the defenders to strike at goal, and a deflection of a defender gave Anna Prothero a chance to flick the ball past the goal keeper to bring the score to 2-1 going into half time.
The first 10 minutes of the second have continued with another goal from both teams, with Beth Wood scoring for Brecon off another penalty corner. This brought the score to 3-2.
However, as the game progressed, the Brecon team were tiring without the advantage of substitutions, and despite some solid work in defence from Brecon Ladies the final score was 6-2. Man of the match was awarded to Brecon goal keeper Megan Thomas. It was a solid team performance which will set the ladies up well for their third game this weekend.
Brecon Ladies train at Christ College Brecon on a Wednesday night 7pm – 8.30 pm and are always keen to welcome new players. They also have a junior and men’s section at the club, with junior training (aged 6+) taking place 6-7pm and men’s training running at the same time as the ladies.
