COMMONWEALTH Games sprinter Morgan Jones will be in action at the 101st Welsh Championships on Saturday.

The para athlete, who competes in the T47 category, is due to run in the 100m para final on Saturday, July 14 at the Cardiff International Sports Campus.

Jones, of Newbridge-on-Wye, competed in the 100m para final at the Commonwealth Games, is one of four sprinters from the Disability Sport Wales Para Academy entered in the championships including 2017 champion James Ledger (T12).

Jamaican athlete, Ristananna Tracey, who won a bronze at the World Championships in London last year, will be opening her outdoor season in the 400m hurdles at the Welsh Championships.

Brecon Athletic Club’s Jordan Price will look to defend his 3000km walk title at this weekend’s Welsh Championships.

Price took the title in 2017, in a time of 15.59.18, and faces a straight final on Saturday.

His rivals will include Paul Gaston, of Surrey Walking Club, Daniel McKerlich of Cardiff AAC and Birchfield Harrier Mark Williams.

Other Brecon AC athletes entered for the championships include Sophie Matthews in the 200m heats on Friday and 400m hurdler Brychan Price-Davies. He is one five entrants in his final on Saturday and one of only two Welsh qualified athletes in the race.

Former Brecon AC athlete Ffion Price will be competing for Cardiff AAC in the 1500m final.Price, from Crossgates and a former Llandrindod High School pupil, is one of 11 entrants headed by 2017 champion Cari Hughes of Swansea Harriers.

In the field Julie Dirscoll is competing in the hammer final on Saturday morning and Jacob Williams will face stiff competition in the men’s final from 2017 champion Osian Jones. The Bangor thrower, who competes for Liverpool Harriers, finished in seventh place in April’s Commonwealth Games final and last year smashed Sean Pickering’s Welsh record, of 68.64m that had stood since 1984, by more than half a metre when he hurled the hammer 70m at an international event in Belfast. Jones set a Welsh Championship best of 66.90m when winning last year’s title.

Brecon AC stalwart Owen Chesher is one 11 entrants in the high jump final including last year’s champion William Edwards, of Cardiff Archers. He took the 2017 title, competing for Carmarthen Harriers, with a 2m jump.

As well as Tom Marshall, from Rhayader, and hammer thrower Jones three other athletes who competed for Wales at the 2017 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are due in action at the championships.

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sally Peake, will be competing in her final Welsh Championship pole vault on Saturday while Gold Coast bronze medalist Bethan Davies, will be competing in the 3k walk.

Marshall’s training partner Ieuan Thomas will be taking on his pal’s favourite 1500m event fresh from a silver medal in his specialist steeplechase at the recent British Championships.

Entry to Friday night’s programme is free and admission for Saturday is £4 on the gate, though there is also free entry for under 16s on Saturday.

The event will also include street food vendors at the trackside and an autograph and selfie area where there will be a chance to meet athletes.
