Brecon CC 1sts 82-2 Rogerstone Welfare CC 1sts 81-10.
AN early start on Saturday to accommodate the desire on all sides to see the Wales v Northern Ireland football nearly came undone when rain interrupted the Brecon 1st home game against Rogerstone.
However when the rain passed the Brecon bowlers ensured football remained on the agenda by skittling Rogerstone for 81.
The Brecon bowling was expertly led by birthday boy Sam Williams (3 for 21) and James Mitchell (3 for 26) with Richard Lovering chipping with a hostile spell in the damp conditions to take a wicket and the icing was placed on the cake by John Kenchington with 2 wickets for 3 runs to put an end to the Rogerstone’s innings.
The fielding was of its usual high standard with Andy MacDonald executing an outstanding leg side stumping however the fielding laurels on the day went to James Davenport for two excellent catches and a direct hit run out.
In reply Brecon went for it from the start and within 15 over’s the play for the day was finished and everyone began to wonder what to do for the next hour and a half before the football started.
Matt Williams was the main aggressor with a brisk 30 and Gregg Webber (25no) kept his fine run going with the bat and at the same time the runs flowing to the end.
The win pushes Brecon to second place in the League with Barry Athletic and Cardiff Gymkhana in hot pursuit and leaves Brecon 18 points behind leaders Malpas. This week sees the visit of Ponthir followed by encounters with all three of the mentioned promotion challenging teams so a vital period of the season awaits the team.
The 2nd team endured a rain interrupted visit to Creigau 2nds on Sunday which was eventually abandoned but not before the home side had been reduced to 119 for 9 from 35 over’s.
This meant that Brecon collected 10 points which sees them 17 points clear of Monkswood their nearest challengers for top spot. This week its Monkswood away so a thrilling encounter is on the cards to mark the half way stage in the season.
