BRECON CC 1st team claimed the Division Two Champions title away at Barry Athletic on Saturday with a performance which underlines the quality in the team as they overwhelmed the home team by 103 runs.

The victory ensured a wonderful double for the club with the 2nd team already having won the Third Division 2nd team Championship.

Going into the last game Brecon 1st team needed 11 points to bag the title, having already won promotion, the result saw the championship claimed on the back of a superb 13 match winning streak.

Batting first in damp conditions Brecon did well to muster 167 all out. Consistent batting set-up the total with Matt Williams (36), Andy MacDonald (26), Gethin Phillips (22) Greg Webber (19) and a late flourish from Sam Williams with 29no being the main contributors.

The Barry reply never mounted a challenge with the conditions ideal for the Brecon seamers who have done so much damage to opposition batting this season and they were shot out for 64.

John Kenchington once again starred with the ball with a superb spell of 5 wickets for 7 runs and with Sam Williams (3 for 19) inflicted his usual early damage the wickets fell rapidly. Tom Jones and Matt Williams with one wicket each were the other successful bowlers in an excellent all round bowling performance.

With only two defeats during the whole season captain Sam Williams can feel justifiably proud of his team’s competitive edge and everyone can now look forward to playing in division one cricket next season for the first time in the club’s history.

The 2nd team ended the season with a washout due to rain which ensured the division three 2nd team champions title with a comfortable 13 points buffer over nearest challengers Monkswood.

The 2nd team too only lost two games all season with captain John Cooke leading a side with many excellent young cricketers in the mix which augurs well for the future of the club.

The next event on the agenda for the club is the AGM which will be held at Brecon RFC on September 23 commencing at 7.30pm. All welcome, so anyone wanting to become involved now’s the time.
