WALES’ leading distance runner Dewi Griffiths recently visited Ysgol Bro Tawe to launch the Daily Mile.
The school in Ystradgynlais has adopted this national initiative to increase the pupils’ fitness and wellbeing and improve the children’s levels of concentration in the classroom.
Dewi, who this year made his debut in the marathon, recently ran for Great Britain in the European Cross
Country Championships in Tilburg in the Netherlands. Dewi was the third British runner home in the senior men’s race, finishing 13th and helping the Great Britain team to a silver medal.
Earlier this year he had hoped to run for Wales in the Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres on the Gold Coast. Unfortunately an injury shortly before the Games meant the runner for Swansea Harriers had to pull out. Acting head teacher Bethan Evans said: “It was a privilege to welcome Dewi to Ysgol Bro Tawe, to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The pupils were so excited to have the opportunity to run alongside a Welsh and British athlete.”
During his visit, Dewi took part in an assembly where he was able to tell the children bout his achievements and talk to them about the
importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Year 6 Bronze Ambassador Jack O’Malley Jones said: “ It was brilliant. It’s not every day you get to run with a British athlete. We
learnt about the importance of keeping fit and being resilient."
