BRECON RFC have followed their success in Sunday’s WRU Plate final by capturing their league title last night.
The club, who have lost just once this season, were crowned WRU League One East Champions with a 26-34 victory at Cwmbran on Wednesday night. They now face a promotion play-off.
The league and plate double was completed at the modest surroundings of Cwmbran’s ground in Pontnewydd following Sunday’s victory at the 74,000 seat Principality Stadium.
Youth team winger Ben Griffin marked his debut for the first XV with a try, one of five Brecon scored on the night.
Hooker Ryan Williams and flanker Ioan Edwards also touched down in the opening 40 minutes and two conversions from outside half Dean Gunter gave the visitors a 12 - 19 lead at the break, while Cwmbran had scored two tries of their own.
In the second half winger Dafydd Edwards and flanker Chris Davies ran in further tries while Gunter added a further conversion and a penalty.
The side, coached by Andy Powell, claimed a maximum five bonus points to give them 93 points for the season so far with second placed Brynmawr having completed their 22 fixtures.
Brecon will play League One East Central champions Glamorgan Wanderers over two legs in a promotion play-off to claim a place in the WRU National Championship.
Brecon have two games to play in the regular season, a home match against Cwmbran, who are tenth in the 12 team table, on Saturday, and another home fixture against third placed Penallta on Wednesday, May 8.
Brecon are set to be presented with the league trophy at Saturday’s home fixture against Cwmbran (2.30pm).
