Brecon Corries 6 Sully Sports 3
AFTER the controversy surrounding their last match, Corries made sure that they did their talking on the pitch and continued their fine run of form. Just one loss in 11 games, and scoring 33 goals in the process, left the Corries eyeing up 5th place in the final League standings with just three games to go.
Canton Liberal were warmly welcomed back to the Rich Field on Thursday evening in the re-run of the game that was controversially brought to a premature end by the referee just 10 days previously. There was no sense of any animosity between the two teams and the game was an enjoyable affair for all those who came down to watch. A superb performance by the Corries ensued and they easily brushed aside the Cardiff visitors with a 5-1 victory. The scorers were Damien Daniels, Dale Evans, Gav Perry and Paul Keddle (2). The only negative is that it should have been 10-1!
Just two days later the visitors to the Rich Field were Sully Sports, a team who have been the stand out team in the League for a decade, and a team that always brings the very best out of the Corries. The home team picked up where they left off two nights before and dominated the entire 90 minutes and quickly raced into a 2 goal lead with goals from Craig Jones, and were displaying some of the best football witnessed at the Rich Field for many a season.
However, despite the dominance the Corries lost concentration for a split second on two occasions, two uncharacteristic mistakes by Corries keeper Stephen Price saw Sully bring the score back to 2-2. But the tenacious Jack Bain and Paul Keddle made it 4-2 going into the halftime break. With the sun shining down on the well manicured Rich Field playing surface the Corries showed complete dominance for the 2nd half. A Damien Daniels goal made it 5-2, effectively killing all Sully spirits. And then a moment of brilliance from the excellent Austin Mellor. Receiving the ball midway inside the opposition half on the left hand touchline he spotted the keeper off his line and lobbed him from all of 30 yards a well deserved goal from one of the Corries’ stand-out performers of the season. The visitors were awarded a penalty in the final minute of the game but all three points were already won by the Corries.
The Corries now look forward to their final game of the season on Tuesday 9th May when Pencoed Athletic visit the Rich Field. A Corries win will see them leapfrog Baglan into 5th place in the final league standings.
