FORMER Cardiff City prospect Dane Griffiths made his home debut for Brecon Corries as they recorded a fourth successive league win to move up to fourth in the table.
The striker, from Builth Wells, was released by the English Championship side at the end of 2014 – during his second year as a professional with the Bluebirds’ development squad – having suffered with injuries while in the capital city.
But Griffiths, who has since played in the Welsh second tier with Montgomeryshire side Caersws, showed his class when he was introduced to the Rich Field faithful at halftime of this Highadmit Projects South Wales Alliance League Premier Division fixture.
An injury to another summer signing, Rhys Thomas from Rhayader, forced the Corries management into changes with the halftime score at 1-1.
The injury proved the perfect opportunity to introduce Griffiths who made an instant impact and was involved in everything good the Corries did in the second half.
The majority of the Corries’ chances came in the first half, most of which fell to the feet of Luke Roughley who on another day could have had five goals within the first 40 mins.
His persistence eventually paid off when he found the back of the net just minutes before halftime.
Despite their dominance the Corries looked vulnerable at the back and some lack lustre defending resulted in the visitors equalising minutes later through Craig Jones.
The Corries’ second goal eventually came when a dangerous cross into the Ton & Gelli penalty area resulted in an unlucky defender turning the ball into his own net.
But as the game went on it was the visitors who looked more likely to score, especially when Roughley was given a red card for a reckless tackle.
Some nervous moments in the Corries defence meant uncomfortable watching for the fans but their fears were relieved with five minutes to go when Matty Jones slotted home the Corries third goal of the afternoon to make the game safe for the home team.
The Corries, who are two points third and 10 behind leaders Sully Sports, travel to sixth placed Baglan Dragons this Saturday confident of recording a fifth league win on the bounce.
The Corries will be back in action at the Rich Field the following Saturday, October 14th (2.30pm) when Ynyshir Albion come to visit.
