SPAR MID WALES LEAGUE CUP
Builth Wells caused the upset of the day by reaching the second round of the Spar Mid Wales League Cup with a 4-2 victory over local rivals, Llandrindod Wells. Manager, Chris Jones celebrated his Spar Two manager of the month award for August/September as second division leaders, Builth knocked out first division Llandrindod on The Lant Field.
Llandrindod might have gone ahead but it was Builth who forged an early two goal lead through Joel Metcalf and Josh Price. Llandrindod hit back in the second half with Kieran McCarley’s corner leading to an own goal before McCarley levelled from a Stuart Williams through ball. The visitors then looked favourites to land the tie but Builth edged in front through substituite, Charlie Boucher before Richie Powell sealed the win with virtually the last kick of the game.
Brecon Northcote were in seventh heaven on Friday night after progressing with a stunning 7-1 victory at Hay St Marys. Topscorer, Joel Evans again led the way with a hat-trick for Nortchote, Craig Evans netted twice with Jack Evans and debutant, Tom Morgan completing the tally while Will Goodwin gained a consolation for a depleted Saints.
Also through to the next round are Knighton Town and Radnor Valley who both maintained their winning ways. Knighton made the short trip to arch rivals, Presteigne on Friday night and ran out 2-0 winners in front of one of the week-ends biggest crowds. Knighton player-manager, Adam Worton said “I felt we controlled the game although Presteigne have certainly improved and it was good to see such a big crowd”.
Mark Jones was denied by Presteigne ‘keeper, Anthony Vernalls before The Robins took the lead with Danny Ives heading in after Matthew Venables hit the bar just before half-time. Knighton had further chances after the break before Jones sealed their passage sliding a second goal past Vernalls.
Radnor Valley made it seven wins in a row in all competitions with a 4-1 home success against Talgarth Town. An own goal put Rador ahead and brothers Elliot and Lewis Morris made it three by half-time.Harry Sharman pulled one back for Talgarth but Callum Matthews ended any thoughts of a comeback with Radnor’s fourth.
Penybont turned in a decent showing before falling 5-3 to first division Bow Street. Lewis Pugh scored twice with Samed De Groot also netting for Penybont while Ben Jones (2), Andy Gittins (2) and Mark Gornall saw Bow Street through.
Newbridge found Division One high fliers, Llanidloes Town too hot to handle as they went down 6-2 at home. The Villagers were four down before Ollie Woods and Aeron Powell briefly raised their hopes but Llanidloes were pretty much in control throughout, their goals coming from Matthew Savage, George Clarke, Richie Evans, Ed Clarker, Callum Jones and Rhys Evans.
Tommy Jones and Dave Anthony earned Abermule a shock 2-1 success in the Dingle derby against Kerry who had two men sent off.
Berriew saw off Dyffryn Banw 5-2 with goals from Richard Davies (2), Matt Mumford, George Davies and Karl Seliaerts while Carno eased to a 5-0 win at Montgomery Town thanks to Harry Holt (2), Peter Rees, Adam Williams and Scott Williams.
Aberaeron won 3-0 at Aberystwyth University thanks to Mattie Davies (2) and Elwyn Edwards while the two all first division ties resulted in wins for Welshpool Town and Tywyn Bryncrug.
Welshpool eased to a 4-0 win against Machynlleth with goals from Adam Davies (2), Wil Thomas and Ricky Lichfield while Tywyn went through 4-1 against Borth United in a tie played on Aberystwyth Town’s 3G pitch. Churchstoke beat Llansantffraid Village 3-2 on penalties after the sides had been locked together at 2-2 after extra-time.
In the one game in Spar Division One, Llanrhaeadr moved second with a 3-2 verdict over Llanfair United. Khyan Wyton, Iwan Matthews and Iain Edmunds scored for the Tanat Valley side with Ben Jones and Paul Griffiths responding.
WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)
Rhayader Town are through to the 2nd Round of the Pip Samuel (Electrical) Mid Wales (South) League Cup following a 3-0 win at Newcastle. Michael Fowlie gave The Red Kites the lead from the penalty spot just before half-time following a rash challenge on Jamie Evans. An unmarked Gareth Hughes netted in the second half from an Aaran Bates corner before Ryan Addison sealed the win when a deflected strike from Ryan Rowlands fell to him. And it could have been four but the normally reliable Fowlie had a second penalty saved.
Also through are Knighton Town Reserves who notched a 3-1 victory at Brecon Northcote Reserves where Billy Hyett scored twice in the first half. Scott Davies added a third before Adam Tester gained Northcote’s consolation.
In the league, Llanidloes Town Reserves regained top spot coming from behind to triumph 5-1 at St Harmon. An own goal had seen The Swifts deservedly lead at half-time but Llanidloes stormed back with Josh Matthews bagging a hat-trick while Adam Nottingham and Conrad Galloway were also on target.
Presteigne Reserves strengthened their hold on third place in the table with a big 9-1 success at Hay St Marys Reserves. The Saints took the lead but it was downhill from there as Tom Crichton completed his third hat-trick of the term for a rampant Presteigne. Spencer Napolitano scored twice with Josh Gardner, Gareth Bull, Nigel Duggan and Owen Williams also on target for Presteigne who have now won four in a row in the league.
SPAR MID WALES LEAGUE
Chris Jones has been named Spar Mid Wales League Division Two manager of the Month for August/September following Builth Wells’ impressive start to the season. The men from The Lant Field currently hold a four point lead at the top of the table and remain unbeaten in all competitions.
Presteigne St Andrews’ striker, Matt Strangwood was the second division Player of the Month.
In Division One the awards went to Huw Clarke (Llanidloes Town), Manager of the Month, and Wil Thomas (Welshpool Town) Player of the Month.
