CENTRAL WALES CUP
Llandrindod Wells are through to the quarter finals of the Central Wales Challenge Cup following a 3-2 win at the home of Radnorshire rivals, Radnor Valley. The Spa Men not only beat the weather but also the in-form Goats in difficult conditions but had to hold off a second half fightback from Radnor.
With the wind in their favour, Llandrindod took the lead when Kieran McCarley’s corner was headed into his own net by a Radnor player. The Spa side increased their lead on 40 minutes with an great strike from Leroy Smith and Radnor had a mountain to climb when Gareth Jones burst forward to convert Shane Pritchard’s cross at the far post on the stroke of half-time.
Radnor knew they needed an early goal to get back in the tie and it duly came from talisman, Joey Price, from the penalty spot. Matt Croose hit the bar for Radnor and Steve Morgan and Elliot Morris both went close while Joey Price fired a free-kick straight at Llandrindod ‘keeper, Andy Leonard. Elliot Morris did scramble a second with ten minutes remaining but despite piling on the pressure, Radnor could find no way past a well organised visitors’ defence as that first half deficit proved too much to claw back.
Knighton Town’s home tie against Tywyn Bryncrug was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch as was Builth Wells’s trip to Churchstoke while elsewhere there were wins for Bow Street, Llanfair United and Waterloo Rovers.
Tom Williams and Tom Evans were the Bow Street marksmen in their 2-1 win against Newcastle Emlyn while goals from Chris Proctor (2), Will Pritchard and Andy Gwilt saw Waterloo come from behind to beat Dyffryn Banw 4-3 after extra-time.
Llanfair beat Spar first division rivals, Kerry 2-1 on Sunday with Paul Griffiths and Karl Seliaerts putting them two up before the returning Matt Mumford reduced the deficit.
The two remaining Huws Gray Alliance sides in the competition were due to play tonight (Wednesday) with Caersws at home against Spar Mid Wales League first division leaders, Welshpool Town while Guilsfield are away at Llanidloes Town.
WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)
Hay St Marys Reserves picked up a much needed point in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) with a 2-2 draw at home against Felindre. Tom Harris put the visitors ahead in the basement battle but Matty Tong ran through to the level the scores. Harris restored Felindre’s lead but the impressive Tong then got his second from the penalty spot after being tripped. Hay began to hold the upper hand in the second half but Felindre stood firm for a useful point of their own.
In the only other game to survive the weather ,Josh Matthews netted four times as Llanidloes Town Reserves moved back to the top of the table with a 9-0 drubbing of local rivals, St Harmon. The Daffs raced into a six goal interval lead with Matthews bagging a first half hat-trick while Adrian Foulkes, Rhys Evans and goalkeeper, Kris Williams, with a goal kick, were also on target. Matthews completed his four goal haul after the break, Foulkes grabbed his second and Oliver Lewis also got in on the act.
SPAR MID WALES LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Brecon Northcote took the spoils in the Brecknock derby in the Spar Mid Wales League second division with a 4-0 victory at Talgarth Town. The result moves Northcote, who were playing their first league games since November, into the top six while for Talgarth it was a tenth straight league defeat to leave them floundering in the bottom two.
The Evans boys again figured prominently in Northcote’s win with Joel Evans scoring twice while there was on goal apiece for twins, Corey and Craig.
Joel Evans gave Norrthcote an early lead when he intercepted a back pass and Corey Evans added a second when he curled n a 25 yard free-kick. Joel Evans added his second and Northcote’s third when he got in behind the Talgarth defence on 25 minutes. Craig Evans blasted home another free-kick in the second half to complete the scoring although to Talgarth’s credit, they refused to give in and kept te Northcote defence on their toes throughout.
In the other Division Two game, Llansantffraid Village closed the gap on leaders, Builth Wells with a 4-1 victory over Montgomery Town with goals from Nathan Prodger, Calum Williams, Matthew Davies and Harry Kerr.
Abermule join Hay St Marys, Llansantffraid Village and Montgomery Town in the last four of the ER Jenkins Division 2 Cup after coming from 4-1 down at half-time to beat Aberystwyth University 5-4 after extra-time. Dave Anthony starred with four goals for Abermule with Charlie Humphreys also scoring.
There were just two games in the first division of the Spar Mid Wales League which resulted in wins for Welshpool Town and Berriew.
Welshpool increased their lead at the top of the tale to six points with Adam Davies and Wil Thomas each netting four in an 11-0 drubbing of Machynlleth. Ricky Lichfield (2) and Ed Baker were also on target for Welshpool who have played five more games than second placed Llanrhaadr.
Berriew pulled off a good 2-1 win against Carno thanks to Jack Weaver and Marc Jones (pen).
JD WELSH CUP
Llanrhaeadr, the sole survivors from the Spar Mid Wales League in this season’s JD Welsh Cup bowed out at the fourth round stage following a 3-2 home defeat a the hands of Bangor City. But they did the Spar Mid Wales League proud with a sterling effort against the Welsh Premier giants.
Llanrhaeadr had taken the lead with an early Iwan Matthews penalty following a foul on player-manager, Marc Griffiths but Yves Zama and Joel Bembo-Leta had Bangor ahead by half-time. When Bembo-Leta grabbed his second six minutes into the second half Bangor were firm favourites but substitute, Daniel Graham got a late second for Llanrhaeadr to set up a tense finish. Dan Kelly was sent off for the hosts in stoppage time.
